We were commissioned to take the photographs for this exciting production by Pepper’s Ghost Theatre Company. The play by April De Angelis takes five famous figures - Nell Gwynn, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall, Doll Common and Mary Betterton and gives a fascinating look at the precarious lot of actresses during the Restoration period. The play was inspired by the book “The First English Actresses” by Elizabeth Howe. The photographs were taken during a dress rehearsal, using the theatre lighting as in a performance. This can be a real challenge for a photographer, but the “moment” is authentic and real. This we feel is the only way to take theatre photographs which capture the meaning of the play and the spirit of the characters.
